Title: AP kit pictures
Message: After unpacking everything, the kit looks great. BIG (heavy) rotors and impressive calipers. The calipers are much lighter than I thought, however. The aluminum bells are gorgeous. In the pics I've got them sitting on top of the rotor, but they assemble from behind. All in all the total weight is probably a bit more than stock. As Phil mentioned before with the Hi Spec calipers, pad replacement is a snap. Remove the center rod from the caliper and swap. Should be simple at the track swapping the red/greenstuffs. The pics are under the "Lotus-general" file @

There is a second page, too. Also for grins, the "Scooby" folder has a couple shots of us hauling the kayak last weekend. I'll have more shots of the install tomorrow night sometime.

Title: AP Brakes
Message: Dave, do you have the component weights of the the AP kit? Without pushing things to the limit, my Wilwood based set-up shaved about 5lbs per side, the stock caliper weighs a 'ton'. It will also be interesting to learn what sort of clearances you have and the AP's caliper and disc's widths. Last weekend we offered-up Doug's wheels to my brake set-up, and we do not even have a 'racing clearance', so I have been re-looking at all the options available, as I originally found there's is virtually no alternative to what I ended up with, and that gives around 1/16" clearance between the disc and wishbone inboard and the same between the caliper and spokes outboard! By the way, I couldn't get to the picture site that you posted. Good luck with the installation.

Title: brake test fitting
Message: I’ve got some pictures up of the test fitting at the yahoo photos site (see previous link). They do look pretty impressive in pieces, but once they are together-oh, yeah! I have some fitment/clearance issues (with the rotor hat bolts of all things), however I think it’s merely a caliper bracket issue. I’ll get it sorted with BG – it appears to be an easy fix. That or it’s real late and I pulled a real boner with assembly. One side (once I got the stock, Loc-tited caliper mounting bolts off! Used that heat shield breaker bar again…) only took about 15-20 minutes to do. Very slick and very simple. I’ll do a write-up in a bit, but suffice to say no one should be worried about tackling this himself or herself. The brake bleeding afterwards will be more time consuming…

sometime tomorrow. I'll check with Yahoo as I couldn't get it to work when I wasn't signed in either...Brian, as for the brakes, I do need to weigh them (no home scale!). I'm guessing near or a touch heavier than stock. The new calipers seem much lighter, but the rotors are bulky. I'll let you know how things go as I sort the clearances. The lower wishbone looks close with this setup, too.

Title: Turbo Problem
Message: Hi Everybody,
Several weeks ago I noticed a slight reduce in my car's performance, but I thought it was only my imagination. Several days ago I found oil spread round the bypass valve. The car seemed to run very well at high RPM, but purely at low ends. Pressure meter on the dash shows about 0,6 at overboost (slightly lower than 0,7 that it should show - I have a manual boost controller installed, at 0,7 bar) and the pressure drops from overboost to normal boost at 0,4-something after a while.
I visited my mechanic, who found oil IN the valve as well as in the turbo-filter box pipe.
He then loosed the pipe from the turbo an did something with his finger (???) and said that the turbo seems to have been damaged, but not much. He also said that he is quite sure that the intercooler must be damaged too.
He should uninstall some pipes and stuff to find out if the intercooler is really damaged.
Is that what it seems to be???
I'm not really a rich man, so I already have a major headache. Am I going to have a stroke?
In that case, what should I do? Buy new parts or reused? Do you know any online stores in EC (European Community) that sell the parts that I will need? Some say that a repair kit that costs some 70 euros is what it takes to be fine. Is that true?
Thank you all.

Title: Oily Water
Message: My engine has now done 212,000 miles and has just encountered its first problem. Inside the radiator header tank cap there is a goo of emulsified oil accumulated and if I stick my finger down into the coolant it emerges covered in blak oil. Can anyone give me an idea of what might cause oil to get into the cooling system. Would it just be a cylinder head gasket or something more serious? If I had water in the oil I would stop driving it immediately but I guess oil in the water is no so bad. Any suggestions anyone?

Title: Exhaust and the Turbo...
Message: I've a question for anyone else here who has done the Garrett turbo upgrade. Did the OEM pipe with the O2 sensor fitting fit the exhaust port on the turbo? My exhaust is getting old, the flexible downpipe is starting to rattle a good bit. BTW, did anyone besides Bill make such a system for this car? I thought it was Bill's when I first bought the car but I've since measured it and it is all 2" pipe so I'm sure it's not his. And the final silencer/muffler is of the round variety. Anyway, the reason for the question is that when the current exhaust was put in, they removed the original O2 manifold and precat and replaced them with a single piece of 2" pipe. I'll probably order Bill's system as a replacement but that will leave me missing the section of pipe that goes between the turbo and the precat. So I need to figure out if I can use the stock one or if I'll need to get one custome made.

Title: Turbo Problems
Message: Dimitri,
Your mechanic was probably checking the turbo shaft for excessive end play. Based on your description, it sounds like you are getting oil blow-by from the turbo, which is a result of having excessive end play or damaged seals. If bearing wear gets bad, the intake wheel can contact the housing, this is very bad as it obviously causes extreme damage to the turbo, and can cause damage to other components should the wheel break.
About the intercooler, I really don't see how the two could be related, the only thing that can go "wrong" is if it is punctured, or if there is a large accumulation of oil inside. Ask him specifically why he thinks it must be replaced....they are expensive and it sounds a little flaky to me....it should be simple enough to flush out accumulated oil.
FWIW, rebuilt turbos are available from several sources, turbocity.com, turbonetics.com, & Bills should have them. I understand you can get a rebuild kit yourself for ~$150 which would probably solve your problem, but removing the turbo & dissassembling it is no party.

Title: Exhaust & the Turbo
Message: Bill,
The Garrett T3 "snail" is different than the one on the IHI, so the elbows should not interchange. From what I have read, I know that Black Hole Performance offers a kit as well, it is different than Bill's. Bill's is a full conversion, whereas BHP uses the snail from the original IHI somehow, as it will allow you to use the stock manifold (and I would imagine elbow as well). If you need a T3 elbow, I have an extra one....but I would think that Bill's includes everything you need, it is offered as a fully installed kit. Of course, this is based upon my recent searchings, it isn't like I own both of these kits;
so people who have can correct me if I am wrong.

Title: Ed's manifold
Message: Ed, I remember noticing your pipe there was different and certainly this is a custom part made to adapt your garret turbo outlet. Bill's system bolts to the OE pre-cat so it won't fit yours the way it is in there now. You need to figure out what exactly you have in there after the turbo. Given the whole exhaust has been redone from at least the turbo itself and beyond, you will likely need to fit a custom system to replace yours after the O2 sensor if you so desire one, as the lengths/angles/etc I don't think will line up with Bill's set-up.

Title: More Exhaust
Message: Doug, What I was thinking was to get Bill's system since it is already fit from the precat back and then just have the piece from the turbo outlet to the top of Bill's precat replacement piece made. But that means that whoever fits it needs to be able to put the O2 sensor mount into the new pipe as well. Of course with the general lack of OEM heat shields around there, I'd also like to get that piece done with the ceramic coating like Bill offers for the downpipe piece. But the question will be weather that plus Bill's system is any cheaper than just going to a local specialist and having a full on one-off custom unit built with 2 1/2" pipe. I really want to get rid of the existing pipe coming out of the turbo as whoever did it the first time used 2" pipe and it won't make sense to get a 2.5" setup unless I replace that too.

Message: I figured they would be different. Also Bill's is only from the precat back. It would normally bolt to the bottom of the "snail" as you call it. Or the bottom of the precat if you are a nice law abiding citizen here in the U.S. Does your extra one include the O2 sensor mount? Where are you at? Guess I could go look in the registry for that...

Message: I will be getting a 2.5" turbo-back exhaust custom-made for my Capri XR2 since no one makes an "off the shelf" performance exhaust for it. I will let you know what it costs as it should be comparable to getting one made for the Elan. Title: Ed's set-up
Message: Ed, I agree with all you are thinking. You just need to decide on the relative costs. Likely a fabricator will be much more happy making the whole system as the top piece is by far the most complex that you need made anyway. You should get a noticable increase in turbo and overall performance from going up to 2 1/2" pipe as well!

Message: Can anyone tell me why my radiator fans only kick on when the temp gage reaches 3/4 (Just before "H") tehn they turn off in 30 seconds or so. I replaced the temp sensor, still same problem. Title: Tom
Message: Tom, sorry my friend, but that is the way all Elans work. The thermostat is of a much lower setting than the thermal switch for the fans. Take the thermal switch to an auto parts store and see if they have a lower temp one with the same tread size & pitch, or do like I did on my Triumph TR8 and run a lead from the thermal switch wires to inside the cockpit, and turn the fans on & off at will with a manual switch. It is really nothing to worry about unless your engine is overheating though.

Title: engine temp
Message: Tom, I agree with Matthew exactly and wanted to second his info to make you feel better. The temp range on the gauge is pretty small so little temp changes make a big difference in the gauge--this makes us worry more than a gauge with a different range. Think of the 1/4 mark as the middle of most gauges which is normal operating temp. Sit in traffic and it goes up a bit and the fans cycle as needed to cool it. It is possible to get thermostat problems like I had where it won't open all the way which can lead to overheating. If in doubt you can change/renew the t-stat or install one with a touch lower opening temp. If this is the worst quibble with your Elan then you are just fine . . .

I misunderstood part of your post. When you said you were thinking of going with Bill's system, I thought you were speaking of the turbo conversion. So, ignore what I said about it being a "full package..blah...blah."
Makes more sense to me now! Yes, the elbow has an O2 fitting. I am in the Chicago area, but I am not 100% sure it would work with your setup, especially since it sounds like there is a question as to what it is exactly :)
Anyway, once you get it all sorted out if you need to get one let me know.

Title: Boost Gauge Problem (?)
Message: G'day to all you esteemed readers. Recently fitted a Tial dump valve to my Elan and have noticed some erractic behaviour on the boost guage. Firstly, why a Tial? Well, I couldn't get a HKS and the dealer in Oz only had the pipes! He couldn't even tell me when the HKS would be in stock. The guy who sold me the Tial said it was the diaphram type and was better than the piston or spring type. Who cares...I wanted one. Thanks to the great stuff on this site, I was able to instruct the mechanic on how to fit it. Thanks fellas. OK, my problem now is that the boost guage does not show any boost during acceleration in 1st gear, intermittantly shows boost in 2nd gear and is OK 3rd through to 5th. Prior to the dump valve being fitted, boost was registered through all gears. I have checked all the connections and looks OK. I know that the turbo is working as I can hear it and there is no drop in performance. I did notice an increase in performance after fitting the valve, and we all know why. Is there an explanation for this gauge behaviour or is it a symptom of something else (major $$$). Look forward to your feedback. Mars

Title: Mars' boost
Message: Mars, G'day and add yourself to the owners' list, mate. Well I can't tell exactly what you mean as you mention performance seems good. IF performance is okay and the only problem is that what you see on the gauge is erratic and doesn't match what you feel then the answer will be that the ground wire to the boost sensor in the engine bay on the right side is a touch loose. This is a common problem and happens to me repeatedly. Tighten the screw (careful not to overtighten into the fibreglass) to that black wire and it should be fine = fixed. On the other hand, if you mean that the performance is erratic as shown on the gauge then it sounds like either a problem with the fittings or the valve working right. Sounds like you checked the fittings so then it could be the valve leaking boost and this would be something to take up with the supplier!

Message: Hi everbody... First of all, thx for the tips Guillermo, Joshua Lawrence, and of course Robert Collins.
About the Temp Valve, I have already installed a lower temp valve, that operates at 88-90 degrees Celcius, when the OEM operated at about 110. the only side effect of it is that the fans operate too often, since they start at 88-90 and stop at ~83. Nevertheless it seems that the car has no further temp problems and it operates firmly.

Title: Dimitris, T3/T4 alternatives
Message: Dimitris, my custom-made multi-port nitrous system cost $1700-USD. It is much simpler in terms of engine-management issues and fabrication than the T3/T4 route, but the downside is that it is not always in use. If it was, you would run through a bottle of nitrous in 2 days! The good thing is, you select when to use it and control it from the cockpit. I have stupified many Camaro & Mustang owners with my little toy, that I could not have before the nitrous. They were more than willing to accept the nod of my head post-defeat; but having the nitrous has taught me they are none too mature after being whupped by a tiny 4-banger.

Title: upgrades
Message: Yes, the link is now finally working (http://photos.yahoo.com/themeyersfamily) I never did hear from Yahoo what was up. Yes, the suspension is a bit ratty. But, no, I'm not taking anything more off the car this year! ;) Dimitris, the T3/T4 kit can add a great deal of HP to the car, but it depends a LOT on fuel delivery. At max stock fuel pressure (43.5psi), I've calculated my 500cc/min injectors should be good for ~290HP. I'll have dyno numbers later this summer. One of the folks on the Isuzu board (www.isuzone.net) is getting ~400HP with our engine on a full T3/T4 swap on an Isuzu RS AWD. (in Cartman voice) Sweeeeet! A less aggressive kit (and less $) is to replace the IHI compressor with one from the Thunderbird (a larger wheel). Costs ~$500, and with larger injectors (370cc/min) should be good for 240HP. For comparison, the BHP T3/T4 kit is around $1,100 (+ injectors and some sort of fuel computer) and can be used to produce 320HP, per Kyle's figures.

This appears to attach to the stock O2 housing (though by your descriptions Ed, you may not be using this due to the T3) and goes to the stock cat. An exhaust shop would have to go from there. May not work, but thought it'd be worth a try!

Title: Rusted Wishbones
Message: Last Saturday I took the Elan out for a bit of prime summer afternoon driving. About half an hour into the drive around some local country lanes I exited a left hander at about 50-60mph and had the rear end go completely loose on me after I'd straightened out. Somehow I avoided an oncoming car and van and brought the car to a halt without any further drama. On inspection I found that the near side rear wishbone had completely broken in two. I strongly recommend that anyone who has a 10 year-ish old Elan check out their wishbones and consider having them replaced if well rusted. It may be that mine had a pre-existing condition other than rust causing it to fail - hopefully Lotus will be able to shed some light on that when they see it - but I think it'd be well worth people checking theirs out. Title: opinions on a turbo idea...
Message: Hi,
Well, I have been playing with various turbos over the last couple weeks, and trying to gather as much info regarding upgrades, etc as I can.
What started all of this was the discovery of cracks in the exhaust manifold & the exhaust casting of my turbo. Assuming it is the same as an Isuzu part, a new manifold is $209, a Jet Hott 2000 coating to help keep it from cracking again is $180, and I just got a quote of $560 for the turbo casting with the option of a complete rebuild for $960.
Anyway, it is starting to add up to the point where it got me thinking about upgrades. I have been unable to locate any information on headers for our cars, so I am guessing there aren't any available? If not, then I am stuck with the stock manifold as my only option, unless someone could share what manifold is used for the T3/T4 swap (maybe a custom fab job?).
This got me thinking...what if I were to have an adaptor plate machined out that would mate to the stock manifold via bolts, and have it drilled for studs mounted in the more common (rectangular) pattern used by most Garret (T3, T4, & T3/T4 hybrids) models? The turbo would then be moved outward by 1/2", but it looks like there is plenty of room.
If such a plate were made, it would allow use of the IHI from a Ford Turbo Coupe, as well as a T3/T4 hybrid, and they could be switched out with relative ease.
So I just thought I would throw this out to see what kind of opinions it generated...am I missing something, or would this work as I intend?
The advantage for me personally would be that 1. I could use the IHI from a turbo coupe, with my only expense being that of a new manifold & having it coated, and 2. It gives me the option of going to a T3/T4 conversion for less cash than the original parts (perhaps down the road).
Your feedback would be apprecaited!

Title: turbo
Message: Joshua, I went through a similar process in searching for an upgrade. If you made an adaptor plate there wouldn't be any problem *mounting* a different turbo. You just want to be very careful with space in the engine compartment. The BHP turbo (stock IHI turbine housing and T4 compressor side) JUST fit back into the car. I had to remove all the manifold studs and the wastegate to get it in. And that was with only a 1/2" spacer between the turbo and manifold so the compressor wouldn't touch the head. The other issue would be the O2 housing and exhaust. With a different turbine housing (the T3, for instance), you'd need a custom exhaust made for the turbo/wastegate exit that matched up with the rest of your stock system. This was another plus going with the BHP unit. Since it uses the stock IHI turbine housing, you can use the stock exhaust. Your swap would work as you mentioned (and would be very cool for some testing), but you'd just need different pipes to attach to the exhaust system. If the compressor sides were different (intake diameter and how far to the right of the engine compartment they sat), you'd likely need different intakes as well. I'm in the process of fabricating a new pipe from the filter housing to the turbo (2 1/2" dia intake rather than 1 3/4", plus it's closer to the filter box). It definitely CAN be done, though. I just didn't have access to a good exhaust person, so I wasn't comfortable going to a full T3/T4. You may want to chat with Bill or Kyle at BHP and they might offer some more suggestions. Check Kyle at BHP: http://home.pipeline.com/%7Eblackhole/index.html or e-mail at blackhole@pipeline.com Bill would also be of help as he does the full Garrett swap or the IHI upgrade.

Message: Dave M, thanks for the input. Actually, as far as the exhaust I am hoping this to be the case, as the T3 and IHI from a turbo coupe both exit directly into a 2.5" pipe. Now...the trick will be getting a pipe up there! But I am sure I can have one bent, although my hope for finding a mandrel bent solution is quickly fading...seems that is still a pretty rare thing. Either way though, it should be much better than the stock setup I would imagine.
Thanks for the tip on BHP, I sent an E-mail to them a couple days ago, if something came through there it would be great. Unfortunately, the T3/T4/IHI combo isn't an option for me, since my IHI housing is pretty much trashed.
I will double check the space, sure don't want to cut that too short! I currently have the entire front off of the car, so it makes this work much easier; however once everything is back in place it might be a different story.
Thanks again,
Joshua Lawrence

Title: Custom Exaust Systems!!!
Message: I just got back from my buddy's mechanic shop. He had to move out of his old spot and into a new place. Turned out that he had to buy out the old business (a muffler shop). So, after talking to him for a while, he mentioned that he can build complete custom exaust systems now since he took over the muffler shop as well. Anyway, he wanted me to mention to my fellow Elan owners that he will be more than happy to custom build the exaust systems for us. I was told the complete system will range from $550 to $750. He can also provide us with "heat wraps" for disappating temperture along with the exaust. The heat wraps will be around another $200 extra. If any one is interested, you can either contact me or call the shop directly for more details. The shop's name is called "Planet Auto Repairs." Speak to Alex or Clay and go from there. Their number is 650-328-0287.

Title: engines
Message: Yes, the Elan uses the 4ex1-t (not sure what the "w" is from your post). A few slight differences: the orientation of the turbo (it points down on the Elan, up on the Isuzu), the Elan uses a crankcase breather and oil separator system, and some other accessories (vacuum switching valves, wastegate actuator, etc.). But the block/head/intake/throttle body/manifold are the same to the best of my knowledge.

Title: Isuzu/Elan engine differences
Message: The Elan uses a different throttle body, as Isuzu changed their engine to use a different one at the last minute after Lotus had already engineered in the earlier TB, which Lotus stuck with. It was amazing how much input Lotus had in developing the turbo version of the Isuzu motor, as it had not yet been fully developed when Lotus came on board with the Elan project. However, the NA engine was already a done deal and Lotus accepted it as is. All this info comes from a Book about the Elan's development that I have and was reading the other night.

Title: NA Elan what if?
Message: An interesting thought for those with an NA Elan who want to upgrade their motor is to keep in mind that Isuzu later made a 1.8 litre version with only 10 more HP but gobs more torque, like 30 lb/ft more. Anyway, that's something I would keep in mind if I had an NA.

Title: engines
Message: There is quite a bit of disagreement as to what, if any, development Lotus did on the 4XE1 DOHC engine. Lotus did not come in and complete the design work on an unfinished engine, they were presented with finished and complete DOHC Geminis for suspension tuning in 1987. They looked at the engine and transmission, liked it, and chose it for their own vehicle. They would never have seen the engine at all unless the engine were done, complete, running, and already installed in production vehicles. Those details that supposedly were changed by Lotus just happen to be the identical details found in the Gemini and I-Mark with that DOHC engine. The throttle body, the hydraulic lifters, the camshafts, etc. Additionally, Isuzu presented Lotus with the early AWD Turbo Gemini engine with the top mounted intercooler. The intercooler pipe has a threaded fitting for the blow off valve that is British Standard Pipe Tapered thread, an obvious attempt to cater to Lotus, but Lotus turned its nose up at the idea of a top mounted intercooler, so this was obviously another case of Isuzu developing the product independently and Lotus requesting revisions, rather than Lotus designing the engine. Lotus made its order based on this early engine, and placed its order for engines with those features. It is likely that Lotus received all of its engines in 1988 or 1989. Lotus likely used out of that stock for the entire production of the Elan. The only aspect of the engine that is undisputed that Lotus developped is the ECU programming, which GM, Isuzu, and Lotus each developped independently for their own cars._ _Now, Isuzu delayed introduction of its own cars until 1991, filling Lotus' order for engines and GM's order for Storms. The 1990 Storm has a transitional control system, between the 89 I-Mark RS and the 91-93 model cars. It has the newer throttle body and the solid lifters, but the emissions system still looks like spaghetti. The 91- models have a more refined emissions system that looks a good bit cleaner in the engine compartment. This is clearly not a case of Lotus developping the engine, but that Isuzu had more time to fine tune things prior to introducing its own car and the result was a more refined engine only because there was more time to tweak things here and there._ _ _Bill Luton

Title: Turbo Not Responding
Message: Hi everybody, just new to your newsgroup, I just know yeel be able to help me.
Happy owner of Elan SE '91 with approx' 60,000km, just serviced last month (only mechanical work done was engine oil change and coolant), BUT over the last Week the Turbo is not responding at all (its like driving around with the hand brake on).
Diagnosis of problems:
a) now - peaks at 0.1 on the dash boost gauge over all gears.
before - it peaked at approx' 0.5 on in all gears.
b) now - max speed peaks at 4100rpm @(100mph/160kph).
before - max speed peaked at 137.5mph/220kph BUT 5000rpm @(100mph/160kph) not 4100rpm.
I would Very Very much appreciate any advice from you all; like any mechanical checks I can do myself before I bring the car to my local garage (not a Lotus garage Do).
It could save me some cash -> DIY or pointing the garage in the right direction if any repairs are required.
I'm currently in Belgium, but also live in UK.
By the way I'm going to Lotus's Hethel Car factory near the end of the June to collect the Elise which a Truck ran over (lucky to be alive), so if anyone wants parts/enquiries from Hethel give me a shout in advance.
I plan on doing major Turbo upgrades to the engine later, based on the wealth of information found on this site. Well done on the site to everybody. The Goodridge brake hoses and EBC Greenstuff are going on this week. I've ordered SpeedBleerers for the Elan&Elise (got the size from Lotus Hethel), If they do fit I will post the size for the Elan&Elise on this news group.
Thanks in Advance everybody
Dave

P.S. is there anyway of boosting the FM reception in the Elan?

Title: Turbo Not Responding
Message: Hi all,
I've checked the engine over for any loose pipes/wires but everything seems OK. I have noticed after taking out the air filter; when I examined the large air pipe going from the airfilter box to the turbo, there was an overall coating of light liquid oil coating the inside of the pipe, is this normal or would it indicate faulty bearings or seals in the turbo.
This car was garaged alot by the previous owner, so I dont think it received the attention it should have. I don't think the break fluid was changed until I got my hands on it.
The RPM speeds I give earlier are in 5th gear as you would have guessed.
Thank in advance everybody

Title: Dave / Andrew
Message: Dave, welcome! Add yourself to the owners list if you haven't yet! Your problem sounds much like the usual signs of a faulty Cam Angle Sensor (CAS)--you can read all about this on the site and many have experience fixing/replacing this part. You should check your error codes and see if this is the case (see write-up). Let us know if it is not this though, but I would bet on it from what you state. Luckily an easy fix. Andrew, to clear the codes you need to disconnect the car main battery for a minute or two then reconnect. The car will have to re-learn a bit when you start driving so go easy for the first few miles.

Title: 2nd sensor
Message: Mark, I remember seeing that as a variant in the "Japanese export model" of the Elan in the service notes. Do check the section about exhaust and engine management to learn about it--I can't recall for sure but it may be a second O2 sensor and clearly it was for stricter emissions--so I'd expect the car to run better without it if you know what I mean! Also you can cross reference your VIN to the model type too.

Title: Turbo Not Responding
Message: Hi Doug
First thanks for the prompt reply, I found the ALDL behind the glove box under the dash board. Got my paper clip and connected it to socket A&D (felt like MacGyver at this stage). The Check Engine Light flashed Once followed by a pause then 2 quick flashes (12). This same flash sequence of 12 continued repeating well over over 10 times which indicates according to the "Diagnosing Check Engine Light Report" the status of 12 "None", which rules out a faulty Cam Angle Sensor (CAS).
After reading that the ECU limits the Engine speed to 4,000rpm, I did assume the ALDL would have something to report but noting. I brought it to the garage for a few minutes, they give it a quick lookover including the turbo & said it might be a damaged Cat under the engine (maybe hit by a speed bump) which may be hindering the flow of the exhaust fumes. They will do a closer examination on Tue as I need the car at the moment, which is still OK to drive. I will keep you all informed of me progress.
Thanks again Doug, have a good evening

Title: Jammed wastegate
Message: I am hoping the someone out there can offer me a litte advice on this problem:
I have just bought an SE Turbo with 72,000 miles up it. The overall condition is excellent, but it has been stood for about 6 months.
In normal driving, everything is fine, but as soon as you start to thrash it at all the boost guage flies off the scale, the engine falters and then the engine's "monkey" light illuminates for about 10 seconds. After this, everything is fine again.
I assumed that the wastegate is not opening to dump excess boost pressure, so I srayed it with penetrating oil and tried to free it with a little delicate persuassion (vice grips...). Still no joy (it didn't seem to move at all).
Can anyone shed any light onto a simple solution, or does it need to go into a dealer?
Thanks in advance!

Title: Putting the boot in...
Message: During a recent wheel swapping exercise with Doug (To check Wilwood brake clearance), we noticed a good helping of anti-rust had been applied to the front wishbone courtesy of a split driveshaft boot...consulting the on-line manuals, it seems like a few specialised tools would be required to do a thorough strip and inspection, so I got a quote from Harry at Orange County Lotus to do the work, the parts kit was around $125, or $450-$500 including fitting. Coincidently I needed to work on the front-end to fit some new dampers, I ordered the adjustable ones from SJ Sportscars, costing about $280 (pair)including shipping to the USA. The parts arrived 7 days after ordering on-line, just in time for the the car's visit to Harry, "While you're sticking the boot in, how about sticking these in too?" Harry duly obliged, both jobs were completed the same day. What a transformation! With the dampers on a mid setting, the steering feels much more positive, corner roll is greatly reduced, the ride is smoother with less 'noise' over rippled surfaces and better traction. SJ's service is first class, and I thoroughly recommend them.

Harry got both jobs done the same day and I escaped with a reasonable $450 bill. What a transformation! The steering now feels more positive, body roll is reduced, traction improved and chatter over rippled surfaces virtually eliminated and ride quality is smoother overall. I can thoroughly recommend both the parts and SJ's service.

Title: Jammed Wastegate
Message: Now..I no longer have my car..so this is from memory...
There is actuation rod that is clearly visable when you look at the top of the turbo. It is attached to a rubber bladder(cant think of a better word) that expands to open the waste gate (again..as I recall)...the arm is attached to the waste gate with a pin and a circlip. Now I have a lift..so it was easy for me to get under the car...remove the heat shielding under the car...and you can see the whole thing....
First...from the top of the car..remove the 3 or 4 bolts holding the bladder thingee with the rod attached...
Then go under the car...and remove the circlip...and pull out the actuation rod...you can then move the little handle that moves the waste gate...If it is frozen there...you can spray in some liquid wrench..(be careful not to get it in your eyes)...and free it up.
If you look at this and the waste gate is free to move...then check the bladder thingee...with the rod attached and make sure that it will expand when you pressurise it...that may be broken and I think it would cause your symptons..
if this does not work...then there is something wrong inside the turbo...and as I never had mine off...I cannot help you there...but I am sure others here on the board can..

Title: Headlights Motors
Message: A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that sometimes one of the headlights refused to go up or down. After a close inspection that I did a few days later, I found that when it came to the far open or closed position the motor was unable to work because it was too tough to spin. So I decided to do something about it, because I thought that I shouldn't replace them with new ones, because of the high cost of the parts. So I started disassembling the motors (only) to clean them and grease the moving plastic parts (gears). The thing is that I did not read the article which refers at this problem and when I finished the above I tried to assemble them by myself... I couldn't hold the brushes apart at the same time that I insert the motor back into the hole. IT IS NOT AN ONE MAN JOB!!! The result of my effort was to crack the brushes and thus operate the headlamps manually. The next day I bought another two pairs of brushes at similar dimentions (5x5 mm) and cut them with a hack-saw at a convenient length. I asked a friend of mine to help me by holding the brushes apart and I reinstalled the motors. From this time on the motors operate as they should be... :-)

Title: Timing check and a chattering noise
Message: I plan to have a go at checking my timing and have been looking for the 'notch' on the bottom crank pully, all I can find is what looks like a thin saw cut on the inside rim. Could anyone confirm for me - is that all it is?
Also when changing gear while driving moderately/around town I have always heard a slight & rapid chattering noise (like - ch,ch,ch,ch,ch,ch.....)from the engine area that I can't track down. The exhaust system has been changed and this made no difference, I wondered if it could be from the Turbo because of back pressure(I don't have a dump valve - yet)- the car has done 79K miles and is otherwise performing well, does anyone else have any experience of this or other ideas about what it could be?
Many Thanks Laurence

Steve from SJ Sportscars (UK)set the dampers where he thought they should be, and so far it seems like a pretty good setting. The dampers were fitted last Friday so I've not had time to dick with them, initial feeling is that the rear now is under-damped (new-ish Lotus dampers)and there aint nuffink I can do about it short of buying some more newuns. Title: throttle position sensor
Message: As I'm putting bits back in the car, I'm reviewing a few pictures I took to make sure the orientation of certain items was the same as when I removed them. One thing I noticed was the throttle position sensor (the black unit mounted on the firewall side of the throttle body that connects to the butterfly valve rod and the throttle cable assembly on the other side of the throttle body) was clearly "adjusted". What I mean by that is it is mounted such that the unit can be rotated clockwise or counter-cw 15 degrees or so. Mine was rotated clockwise to the max allowable (by the mounting bracket). So looking at the engine from the front, the unit's right edge is up. Due to this orientation, could this prevent the ECU from seeing WOT? i.e.- the shaft would not rotate as far one way due to the "adjustment". And since it is rotated, what is this affecting? Idle? If a picture would help (seeing how I'm using 1,000 words trying), let me know and I'll e-mail. I'm just curious if this is "stock" or what others look like. Or this part something totally different? :)

Mark...the sound is what I was worried about. HKS say it's supposed dump excess pressure more progressively as it increases as opposed to just a complete dump at a given pressure. Maybe so...maybe it's just more boy racer blah blah blah.

Title: mystery engine missing HELP!!!
Message: I have a 91 with about 44k miles. I bought it with 42k last year and had Lotus dealer do
headgasket, timing belt and tune up on it.
The mystery begins: started with the engine missing 3 or 4 times in a row in 3rd gear at about 70mph. You could wind out 1 and 2 to near red line and no problem.
The mystery continues: then it started not being able to go more than 70mph in any gear at all: 3, 4, or 5. You could hold the pedal all the way down and it just wouldn't go faster, and the only thing else that was strange was a kind of hissing sound in the exhaust. Then it started going up to 90 mph before it would start missing.
The mystery becoming more sporadic: not the engine misses sporadically. Sometimes in 2nd gear when you push it hard, sometimes, 3 4 or 5. (Use only Amoco premium, have torquemaster plugs in it that are new)
My non-Lotus mechanic is guessing fuel pump going bad or something about the coil (the part that it has instead of a distributor cap.)
Please help!!!! Thanks! tim in chicagoland

Message: Guys, see the tuning notes for info on making a blow off valve silencer. You could alternatively plumb the BOV output into the intake and make it a "true bypass valve" which would silence it for sure (see bypass write-up). I think it's pretty impressive the energy stored in that valve discharge and sure am glad it is not backfiring thru the turbo--a la normal set-up!! Tim, perhaps we need more info to track it down! Elan distributor and plug wire problems are not unheard of. You can check the wires for shorts with a ohm-meter. Also it could be something like the dreaded CAS (see write-up and archives) so check if you have any engine error codes. Could even be corrosion on one of your engine sensor contacts--you could check this with the FreeScan program (still not adapted to the Elan though ;-[ ) or by using the dealer's "Tech-One" tool with the enigne running or driving with it. Those are the things on the top of my list from your post!!

Title: BOV
Message: the HKS sequential is different from the stock HKS. the opening that vents the pressure is about an inch in diameter and is at the end of a tapered cylinder that is about 3 inches in diameter - it looks like a huge bullet. so you would have to cover almost the entire thing with a silencer. it also works differently - the venting valve opens inward, getting sucked in by a drop in manifold pressure, rather than popping out like most of the
BOVs. i think covering the opening could impede the valve from opening. IMHO its one of those hi-tech pieces of junk that probably improves performance by about 1/2 of 1% but looks really cool.

Title: Tim mistery engine
Message: Hi Tim, what I found strange is that you can get full revolutions in 1st and 2nd, but not 3rd. Most engine control mechanism work with revolutions, load, temp's, throttle pos et al., but not gear. That sounds more of the engine being unable to get more power. First of all, what engine are we talking about, N/A or Turbo ? If its Turbo, what do you see on the boost gauge on full throttle in 2nd ?

Title: strange noise
Message: hi to all elan drivers! since I bought my elan one year ago there was always a strange noise when Iam driving over 5000RPM and with max. boost. My local turbo-center thought the noise cames from the turbo, so they do a turbo-rebuild. But after the repair the noise, sounds like fast airflow braking on a edge, is exactly the same as
befor. Iam using a drop in K&N Filter, all other components are original.
Does Someone has an idea where that noise could come from?
thanks a lot and regards from austria to all lotus drivers

Title: HKS Valves
Message: Mine also came with one of those HKS sequential type BOVs. I would have to agree with Mark on doing anything to it. The way it is designed it just doesn't lend itself to silencing or plumbing back into the turbo intake. Actually, trying to route it into the intake might prevent it from working correctly. The suction against the BOVs diaphram from the turbo intake (outside) would compete with the suction trying to open the BOV from the inside. The BOV would either not open all the way or may not open at all. I'm not sure if this would be the case or not, but it's the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about trying to route it back to the turbo intake.

Title: fuel tank
Message: Thanks, Dimitris for reminding me...had a brain fart and forgot to post this earlier. A fellow Elan owner from my Chicago club has heard that Lotus is sending two test rigs around the US for dealers to check fuel tanks on
Elans. They will only be at each dealer for a week or two, and apparently the Lotus order is that only cars which have been in for service (regular, I assume) in the last 12 months can be checked. Regardless, if you have an issue it's worth a call to the local dealer to see when/if they are getting the equipment and if you can get your car in. This may not see like it helps those out of the States, but it DOES indicate Lotus is starting to fess up to the problem.

Title: Dave M.- Elan 4 Sale
Message: Dave M. I see that you are from the Chicagoland area. I was wondering if you saw my prior posting about the nice Elan for sale in East Dundee at Miro Motors. Did you check out the car? If not, I suggest you or another one of your club members check it out. It's very nice and has very low miles. I don't know what it has under the hood for aftermarket stuff, but I know it has one of those roll bars from those guys in Michigan. Check it out at
www.miromotors.com. There are about 5 photos of the car on their site. It would be a shame to see a nice Elan like this go to a little
teenie-bopper who doesn't appreciate this car, and its qualities.

Title: SoCal JUNE ELAN GATHERING
Message: Here is the plan:
We gather at Derelict's Donuts in Huntington Beach around 6:30 am on Saturday June 15th. After a couple of hours of donut eating and drinking coffee, as well as patting each other on the back, for our great Elan upgrade stories, we proceed on a drive down PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) to Huntington Beach boardwalk area for breakfast (brunch), Make sure you bring plenty of quarters for parking meters. At that hour we shouldn't have any parking problem. Yes, this is the same are Bill took Doug and myself and we had crab sandwiches...
After a couple of hours of heavy Elan upgrade discussions, we proceed down PCH to Dana Point and Capistrano. We then go to 5 North and get off at Ortega Highway, then east until we get to the Mission San Juan Capistrano. After that, we return back to 5 and head to our separate destination from there. What do you think?(see attached map). Please feel free to forward this to all interested parties, and let's try and make this the greatest Elan Gathering ever!!!!-
"Donut Derelicts"
Various dates — Every Saturday morning (except major holidays), a group called the Donut Derelicts shows up for what some bill as the largest informal car show around. The event regularly attracts more than 150 classic cars, hot rods, and muscle cars. Adam's Avenue Donuts, corner of Adams Avenue and Magnolia Avenue, Huntington Beach. Show up between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. (mall opens at 9 a.m. and gathering ends). (714) 962-8921.
Plan on arriving as close to 6:30 AM as possible. The closer it gets to 7:00 AM, the more difficult it's going to be to find parking spots at Derelict's next to each other. If you can't get there early, and can't find a parking spot. You can park across the street.

Title: Tyres / Tires
Message: I have been trying to decide on the SO3's or the new Michelin Pilot Sport. On the www.british-cars.co.uk BBS there seem to be a lot of fans of both brands for the Elan (and Elise)but not many have tried the latest versions yet. I think the SO3's may have the better grip in the wet and they are cheaper but, they are directional so not so easy to swop around and also they probably won't last quite as long as the Michelins. Apparently Lotus originally picked Michelins for light weight and stiffer side walls which suited the Elans handling. Yesterday I put 2 SO3's on the front of my Saab 95 which is going to be my test bed!

Message: Tonight I noticed a very high pictched noise at idle - almost like security system ultra high frequency noise.
I also noticed the turbo gauge was acting funny - boost was flipping around quite a bit and for a while there was considerable boost even at idle. I accelerated strong several times, the boost problem corrected itself, but the high pitched noise remains....any thoughts? Wastegate or turbo problem?
Jun 15, 2002 - 08:01 - From: George
Title: high pitch noise
Message: Steve, I think the boost gauge and the noise are 2 seperate issues. With the erratic gauge needle, chances are, your gauge wires are not grounded properly. It's a easy fix, just pop your hood, look to your left side as you stand in front of the car, find that little cylindrical object with wires under the hood. Then tighten the bolts, it should be fixed. With the high pitch noise, I experience that as well. My culprit is that I have a custom stereo system. Since the Elan is a plastic car, grounding for the electronics is a little difficult than normal. My gets slightly louder as the rpm climbs as well. Don't know about yours, but it could be as simple as electrical noise that are coming out from your car speakers. Cheers, George

Title: bike racks and funny noises...
Message:
hi guys, i've had my 1st elan [and 1st lotus] for about 5 weeks now and truly love it. However, now that i've finished the inital stage of "playing" with my new toy, the questions are going to start..
Firstly, i'm looking at getting a high clearence bike rack on which i want to hang a kite buggy. Does anyone now where i can get one in the UK ? I bought one from halfords that are meant to fit any car, but it doesn't look like its going to work out.
Secondly, when slowing down at certian speeds there is a very loud resonating whine/hum and the whole car
viabrates. This occurs in a small band between 95 - 105 mph. When slowing down under power
(ie going up a hill) it is not present. Strangely, it also occurs when travelling slowly in a high gear when wet !! 30mph in 5th in the rain and i frequently get the same
whine/hum/viabration when slowing down. It is not present in dry conditions at the samw low speed in high gear ?? any ideas ?? possibly driveshaft ??
Thirdly, how quickly do you become acustom to the power and performance, for the 1st few weeks it seemed much faster then it does now....?

You just made my mind up - SO3's it is - thank you! I have the 2.3T Estate (170bhp) which I thought was quite quick until I got the Elan! Now I really wish I had the fully blown Aero with 250bhp. As it's on contract hire I can't start playing with the turbo. I was going to try the Bosh dump valve as used on the Saab on the Elan but it looks pretty small and now Steve Privett has given me his old top end inlet pipe so I think I will get a blue spring

Guillermo, my other car is a recently bought Subaru Imprezza TS Wagon, the main function is as a doggie transporter, so the WRX version was not even considered. Quoted power is the same as our
Elan's, though the auto' box and extra weight end the similarity of performance, however the ride and lack of body roll are a closer match. I did have an old Thunderbird Turbo Coupe as my daily driver some time ago...until it caught fire...sadly I did not realise at the time that the Turbocharger could have been salvaged and put to work in the Elan as an upgrade!

Apparently you can drive around without this on the car (while I clean and re-paint it). Do you all agree? Also, what I am guessing are the upper wishbones (u shaped folded metal bars running transversely about 8 inches higher up than the lower wishbones) are really rusty. Does any one know if these are easily replaced? Lastly, are the hazard switch and matching blanks easy to get from gm and why are my indicators playing silly buggers

Title: So Cal Elan Gathering Thanks
Message: It was great seeing everyone there! The event was fun and given more time, we could have had a better drive... Traffic on PCH on Saturday makes it difficult to maneuver 7
Elan's. We did make a statement, as crowds looked-on and commented on the Lotus cars. It's always fun to see the Lotus Elan in groups of 5 or more, and specially in different colors. As always, Bill Sun has proven to be the most valuable member of our group, by being such a generous host. Seriously, next time, it's going to be my treat, we can't let Bill have all the fun! I'm certainly going to have to take back all those bad things I have said earlier about Bill -- after this.... :-)
I big thanks to Bill for his generosity, and also to Doug for giving us a fantastic resource to use and meet other Elan owners, and share our knowledge (and frustrations). Thanks you also Dennis, Jacob, Randy, Brian (and Sean) for your participation. Next time, we are going to have to plan a gathering over here in the San Diego area, with a possible drive to Julian (lots of
twisties). Hopefully, we can get just as many Elan owners to come down here.
Doug, thanks again for all you efforts, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that I probably would have not purchased this car, had it not been for your website and the great documented fixes available. Keep up the good work! In fact, when I got home, my LHS window would not work and that late afternoon I spent 4 hours readjusting the window risers and lubricating. Doug, have a great time with the Golden Gate Lotus Club and I'm jealous on being so close to those great tracks. We will miss you on our Derelict's runs.

Message: Hi Guys, sorry for not hogging the MB lately but I will make up for it now. I have been terribly busy at work and home lately. Planning the move in 2 weeks so dropped the Elan off to get the broken fuel gauge (last 3 years) fixed--$650 later my feul gauge is working as the only visible difference! New tank innards were required to replace the faulty rheostat float unit. Being the male packrat I am I kept the old parts, so I now have an extra fuel pump with 80K miles on it in case anyone wants to trade for a short shift kit, etc ;-) When picking up the Elan after a 10 day absence my first thought driving it was, "what happened to the brakes!" Then I remembered that "that is how they are." Well hopefully I can figure out a better/cheaper alternative to the AP brakes soon, since there is no other alternative and I really want/need better brakes.

Regarding the other car, I too am a Scooby owner with a '98 outback wagon as the baby hauler and designated "beater car." I will also now publicly admit that last month I bought my wife an '02 Acura MDX as the "new" baby hauler (expecting in 6 weeks). I am against SUVs in principle but seeing the MDX is a certified ULEV (ultra low emissions vehicle) and can easily pull my Elan in tow, I caved! I will be trailering my Elan behind the MDX to NoCal so if anyone has any specific Elan towing tips please let me know. The Scooby will be my new main ride to work seeing how it actually rains in Northern California and I have no covered parking at work up there. The Elan will get some well deserved rest, upgrades, and windy wine-country backroad use!

Title: Non-Interference Valve design
Message: According to a friend of mine that has rebuilt the Elan engine several times...He rotates the engine
(ie: turns the crank..) several times when setting the timing. He is able to move the engine through all four cycles on all for cylinders without the valves hitting the pistons. Now this is with the timing belt OFF. So...It seems to me that this says that the engine in the Elan is a non-interference design..so should the belt break..it will not damage the valves. Now..a word of caution to all..this is second-hand information. I have not done this myself, so I cannot personally vouch for this...but I thought you would like to know what we have researched out on this so far. It seems to me that this would make sense..as most manufacturers have gone to the non-interference design..as a belt failure during warranty gets mighty expensive to the manufacturer...I am not telling you all to wait till it breaks before worrying about your timing belt..all I am saying is that the only evidence we have come accross seems to point to the way, that you will not damage your engine should the belt break. We have heard of nobody that has had a belt break.....and of nobody that has had a belt break and had engine damage. Has anybody else heard of one breaking?

The results were Goodyear F1 GS-D3 (8489 points/first place)ContiSportContact (8414)Toyo T1-S (8334)Pirelli P7000 (7983 but poor wet braking performance)Mitch Pilot sport (7684)Dunlop SP sport (7623)Bridgestone SO3 (7605)Avon ZZ3 (7481). The tests were carried out on road and at Goodyear's test track in France with a Ford Focus ST170 and were very very thorough. Both the Pilot sport and the SO3 scored OK on Dry but Low on wet handling although both could stop OK. Toyo's only fell down on the fact that they showed more wear over the test than anything else but otherwise they were up there with the best and cheaper to buy than most. Size tested on all was 215/45 ZR17 now I have to check if I can get the Goodyear/Conti or Toyo for my stock UK 15" rims! Laurence

Title: Bumper Info
Message: Should any else need to replace the front bumber (Lotus USA only has 4 left) the sidemarker openings do not exist. The body shop I used said it would be extremely risky to try and make the openings, as the edeges are molded, etc. and it's likely the material would crack and split. In other words, they have to be stamped by the appropriate machine when manufactured. Explanation from Lotus? ? Nevertheless, the bumper looks better without the
sidemarker. One thing I found was the oil cooler had a slight leak as the connection needed to be tightened.

I decided to change the engine oil and to make a real good job of it I decided to flush out the old engine oil. I do not usually read instructions first, but this time I did. Big mistake. It said warm up engine, then add the flushing fluid. As in everything else in life, I tend to over do things, so I got the engine really hot.Big mistake again. I started to add the fluid to the oil, not being to careful about the odd drip, when suddenly flames erupted from the turbo area, I know what your thinking of course they would the stuffs inflammable, I know that to now.I thankfully had just cleaned the car and a bucket of water was still handy. This was thrown onto the engine in a ml second so no damage. To add to the stupidity I have a fire extinguisher in the car I never thought of using. So if there is anyone out there as stupid as me be careful.

Message: I have had a couple of bad experiences after using flushing oils/fluids, my slightly noisy old MGB engine got a lot noisier and the cam went immediately on my Ford Escort RS2000. I assume it's because the stuff I used did not provide adequate lubrication for the specified short time I ran the engines before draining. I am also a bit concerned that you never get absolutely all the oil out of an engine when doing an oil change so a small amount of the flushing fluid might stay in the system with the new oil. PS. My M100's hydraulic tappets sound much..much quieter on cold start up now I've changed to fully synthetic Mobil 1 - Good luck

Still awake, then pictures of the Hi Spec bits on the car ( 285mm disc, 4 pot racing
calliper, in 15" wheels ) are here : http://www.mardibloke.co.uk/pics/hispecfitted/index.htm The new ECU 285mm discs weigh in at 5.7, my old Tarox ones where 5.1. 2 x Hi Spec racing
callipers, all the bolts, brackets and pads came in at 5.1, with all the Lotus bits weighing 8.3. So a saving of 2 for the Hi Spec bits. NB those weights included packinging - but same packaging used for the Lotus vs Hi Spec
weighings.
Fitting was pretty easy, but make sure you have all the bits before you start - too late I discovered the bolts to attach the brake lines to the callipers were a different thread and Hi Spec had not sent new bolts.
I'm still bedding in the new pads, and while initial bite is not really there yet, the callipers do appear to have more power - I locked a wheel by accident - never managed that with any setup I have tried so far.

Title: Rear Brakes
Message: The problem with the rear brakes is that they seize up at the pins...These brakes are from the of the GM "W" body cars from the late 80's...they were the focus of a class action lawsuit that GM lost..and had to provide kits to retrofit the brakes. They are notorious and well known..any brake shop here in the states is familiar with them.I took mine to Midas Muffler here in the states,
(dont know where you are) and for $100 they put on the retrofit kit, both wheels. It is called a sleeve and pin kit..after you have it on you should use the parking brake emery now and then to keep it freed up...that is what GM suggested after they did the retrofits.
This is a well known fix here in the states..I am not sure about other parts of the world.

Now if we could just get together with Philbo (for another Hi Spec kit), Brian (with the
Wilwoods), Doug (the OEM EBCs), and maybe someone's stock car on track somewhere to swap cars and compare brakes for everyone...maybe we could get SCC to sponsor the thing? ;)

Title: No torque
Message: I have come to realize that the Elan has NO torque low down in the rev range. A Honda Accord V6 Coupe beat me off the line this morning. Now I will admit I was not revving the engine for a jack-rabbit start, but still right off the line he jumped me to get around a slow-moving-diesel-spewing truck. Well he felt pretty good after that bcuz he was weaving in/out of traffic with me on his tail. Little did he know I had just armed my nitrous system; now we are talking torque. Instant torque! At the next light I left him behind like an old lady, and again at the next light. After that light he stopped weaving through traffic behind me and didn't even try. I'm guesing he thinks I didn't try the first time, but I did! Having nitrous makes all the difference in the world, and was worth every cent of the $1700 I spent to have it; especially since the nitrous expert who worked at the speed shop has gone on to parts unknown... so I couldn't do it now even if I wanted to. By the way, I AM running Falken Azenis Sport tires and they are GREAT, just don't expect a quiet ride.

Title: Tire Weights/Torque
Message: Rod, that chart Steve pointed to seems to confirm that the Toyo T1-S is a fairly lite weight tire. I currently have the older T1 (no -S) in a 225/40ZR16 size and they seem to be a good tire and give a pretty quiet ride. The newer T1-S is supposed to be better than the T1, but then they all say that. The only thing I can't speak to is the wet traction, living in the desert like I do... but the mags give it good ratings. Matt, yeah the low end torque is just not there. When I was running the autocrosses, an overly tight course would just kill my times. Speeds would be just fast enough to keep me from dropping back to first but not quite enough to keep the turbo pounding. Made for some lazy exits on a few corners. Though I'm sure part of it was the driver too.

Title: Fuel tank
Message: I have gotten a couple of e-mails regarding my recent posting regarding free replacement of the fuel tank. So I figured I would share with all what I know... In my case, my local Lotus dealer contacted me. If there is a Lotus dealer in your area call them ASAP. This has to be done by a dealer but I don't think it matters if you bought the car from the dealer, however I did. The Lotus corp is not necessarily doing a recall but they have agreed to cover the tanks under Warranty. They are calling it a warranty because a recall would mean that they would have to replace all tanks, leaking or not. They don't want to do this because there are only about 200 tanks left in existence and more than 500 cars. You will need to take you car into the shop where they will do a pressure test on the tank. If your tank is leaking you will likely fail. Lotus will then replace it for free. Hopefully this will work out for you. (If not it will cost you $700+) Grant

Title: Rear Brakes
Message: Rod
My car was behaving just like yours and I was convinced it was a problem at back but then a front caliper seized on and I was forced to sort the front first. After that I had no problem with the back jumping out of line. I assume that for quite a while I had one sticky front caliper which was causing very uneven braking. I don't know if this makes any technical sense but I am also suspicious (because of a corroded disc surface) that the rear on the diagonal (same circuit) to the sticky front caliper was not braking as well as the other rear. Now the corrosion seems to be wearing off quickly. I also jacked the back wheels up and spun them and had someone apply the handbrake and foot brake to make sure they were at least operating. I have now just got through the MOT (thanks for the tip about the Trolly Jack in the boot/trunk). The backs were not perfectly even but the tester thought they were quite acceptable. Even if one of the backs was not fully effective, with those proportioning valves I now wonder if one good back brake could do enough work on it's own to make the car jump around (at least if your braking in a straight line)? If you haven't already, I would recommend checking to see if you've got even pad wear at the front, they're a lot cheaper to fix! Laurence

Title: Rear Number Plate Cover
Message: Phil
Beware, I cracked the perspex trying to pull it off cold (why didn't I think of a hair dryer?). I think the original intention was to remove the whole assembly from the car (via the screws in the boot then clean it from behind through the opening for the number plate and number plate lights. Also I have not had much luck re-sticking my slightly cracked
perspex. It's £50 for new perspex from a specialist dealer or about £130 from Lotus to replace with the later open type number plate
surround - I have bought one of these to fit when I get around to it. The details are in the service notes you can get to via this site. Laurence

Title: Fuel tank
Message: Thanks to Grant I contacted my local Lotus dealer and was told to write to the following for possible reimbursement of my December 2001 purchase of a fuel tank: "Lotus Cars USA, Inc, - Attention: Warranty Division - 500
Marathon Parkway - Laurenceville, GA 30045" Below is my letter...
Dear Sir,
I understand you are currently testing 1991 Lotus Elan Fuel tanks for leaks. My tank was leaking, and was replaced by Matheny Jaguar in Jacksonville, FL on 12/14/2001. I have included the receipt, wherein other work was also done which has nothing to do with my letter. By my calculation, the dealer charged me $607.63 (including taxes) to replace the fuel tank. As mine was definitely one of the faulty ones (the dealer states on the receipt “gas tank split on side”) will you be reimbursing me under the warranty coverage you are extending to cover this problem?
I was told by Brad in the service department at Matheny Jaguar/Lotus to contact you regarding this matter and any monetary compensation involved. I have also sent a copy of this letter to the
NHTSB, as they provided a form for me to fill out and return after I called to file a complaint.
The courtesy of your reply would be sincerely appreciated,
Matthew Welsh

Title: various answers/help
Message: Hi All, just got back to town and yes catching up on the board takes some time :-) Tom, there is no longer ANY motor mechanisms from Lotus anywhere (confirmed by my local dealer who had to fabricate parts to fix one)!!! The idle is set by the computer in response to various sensor readings and is not
changeable by a human. When you start the car be sure to wait with the ignition on a second or two before you engage the starter--this is to allow the IAC (Idle Air Control valve) to reset--a temporary high idle could be from this. If you CTS (see repair section) sensor is going out it will give you a high idle and needs to be fixed before things get worse. Also could be due to other sensors a bit off, engine timing out of whack, fouled
plug(s), bad spark wire(s), dirty injector(s), or the likes. Paul, checkout
www.LotusElan.net for info on older
Elans. Steve, I have even sent my old rear rotor into a brake parts place and they measured it and found they could not cross reference it to anything!! Perhaps someone in Europe could do
this for us, cause I agree it would be nice to get some quality rear replacement rotors! Chad,
with both 5th and reverse out sounds like very improbable to be a transmission thing which is the good news--the bad news is it sounds like your crossgate cable needs hopefully adjusting (info on site and in manual) or at worst replacing (advice: do not replace just one, do them both if you are there)!

Title: Aftermarket Boost gauges?
Message: Hi everyone,
I currently have the dash panel removed from my Elan, and while I am installing stereo gear/replacing failed bulbs i thought it sure would be a nice time to replace my flaky electronic boost gauge!
I figure this must have come up in the past, and wondered if anyone had found a nice replacement for their Elan yet? I was looking at some Autometer & VDO models which would no doubt physically fit and work, however they really don't look very stock as we have Red markings on a black faceplate.
Is anyone aware of a model that would match our OEM instruments? I would like to replace this, as the electronic sending unit doesn't seem to work very well, and I have serious doubts as to its accuracy...
TIA!

Title: Oil pressure
Message: I'm getting a bit of noise from my tappets at cold starts. I realise that this not uncommon but what concerns me is that I get no indicated oil pressure for a second or two at startup (oil light is on, gauge reads zero) and, predictably, this correlates exactly with the noise... I'm not sure whether the oil pressure always took a little time to arrive and I only noticed when I started getting tappet noise or the oil pump has recently started performing less well (and I'm wearing the engine to bits at startup). Once I've got oil pressure the car runs perfectly and the oil pressure behaves normally. I use fully sythetic oil (Mobil 1, changed last week) and I've tried a couple of different viscosities... How quickly does the oil pressure come up typically? Any other thoughts/experiences?

Title: Bumper (cont.)
Message: Richard, the sidemarker openings are indeted with rounded edges to accept the sidemarker light so it will fit flush. Therefore, making a proper opening is not possible without using a fabrication shop for who knows how much $. Per Lotus, the bumpers are Kia produced (see the Kia site and you'll notice the sidemarkers don't exist). Lotus suggests converting the front quarter panel to the European design and they have the part that will fit onto the opening, rather than flush with it (I would still have to make an opening if I chose this route) so it seems to have a larger margin for error. FYI, Lotus USA has a rear clamshell in stock but other major body parts such as the front shell, etc. will likely be outsourced for production in the future. There are probably an odd assortment of parts left at the factory but " they have to call" to find out what's available.

Title: tank, towing
Message: Mike #1, it's the same part, so yes it can recur, but hey we have admission that there is a problem--thus the likely 'reason' (among others) for not doing a "recall" was that then they'd have to re-engineer it and produce a superior part to really "fix" the defect!! Mike #2, I am going to trailer my Elan Friday 500 miles so I will get back to you for tips. I had it flatbedded once and can say that I'm pretty sure the chains used to haul it up on the flatbed chipped the paint under the front nose which has caused a large area to flake off since. You have to strap the chains to the frame at the suspension as there are no real tow/strap/pull points on the Elan. It's not the best idea but if you have no other choice then it is an easy one!

Title: Isuzu parts
Message: Good find Tom (and Kris)! You bring up a good point that doesn't hurt to be made again. When searching for anything engine-related, try 1991 Isuzu Impulse RS (or go to the Isuzu dealer) parts first. Our car has the identical engine (the 4EX1-T) and should match up perfectly. If parts get into exhaust (after pre-cat), intercooler, intake (pre-turbo), or other ancilaries however, be careful. The Isuzu does differ in those areas. If you have a question, feel free to e-mail me. I have the Isuzu engine manual

Message: I took my car to the local lotus dealer (los Gatos, California). They found that the tank leaked and quoted about $1,350 to replace it. I called Lotus USA to find out if they would pick up the cost of replacing it. They gave me the number of the field technician (I do not remember his name) and he told me that Lotus might pick up the cost of the tank, but not of the labor to replace it. When I called my lotus dealer they said that the cost of the tank was about $200, and that I still had to pay about $1,100 in labor. I thought that the labor time associated with replacing the tank was about 2 hours. Does any one have any information on this? Thank you.

Title: Fuel Tank - corporate runaround
Message: Regarding the letter I sent Lotus USA, Dave Simpkin, (714)348-1614, called
me today and said that only 6 or 7 cars out of the thousands of Elans
produced had experienced cracked fuel tanks; not enough to warrant a
liability on the part of Lotus Cars. He said the only reason they are
testing the car's tanks for leaks is to determine if they need to make
another production run of fuel tanks. However, in the same conversation he
said that if Lotus determined warranty work were called for they would only
reimburse the owners $188 (the cost of the gas tank) plus 2.5 hours labor.
I paid 4 hours labor and $258 for my fuel tank, so was my dealer just
ripping me off? It appears that we are getting the shaft from all over the
place, because I got a different story from this SAME gentleman only 2
months ago. Also, his claim of only 6 or 7 leaking tanks is simply
ludicrous! Doug, is there any way you can set up a site on the board for
owners to put their names and VIN numbers if they have experienced a cracked
or leaking fuel tank (from ANYWHERE in the world, not just the USA)? I
think the only way we can make a case to Lotus or the NHTSB is to gather
together our own facts, as I think Lotus is trying to sweep this under the
rug as quickly as they can to avoid the cost of paying their supplier for
another production run of tanks.

Title: fuel tank, warranty, legal issues
Message: If you check the NHTSB site, you will see where it says that regardless of the age of a vehicle, a manufacturer is responsible for PERSONAL SAFETY DEFECTS pertaining to their product. A leaking fuel tank IS a personal safety defect, as gasoline "go boom". Lotus knows this, but is trying to dance around the issue by giving the standard line that the car is too old for them to be liable anymore, when in fact this is not the case because of the nature of the problem. God forbid, let someone burn to death or blow up because of this problem, and a lawyer would have a field day with all the posts on this board we have had with Dave Simpkin alone, much less other people who work for Lotus that have given us the runaround. THEY ARE LIABLE FOR THIS, at least in America with our legal system. Are there any lawyers out there within our group who would be willing to send off a letter to Lotus? We are being bamboozled in the biggest way.

Message: Hi all
Just to let yee know, I solved the problems I was having with the turbo on 9’1 Elan SE, when it would not go above 0.1bar and the engine rpm max was 4,000rpm.
Guess what it was, ECU test returned 12 (no faults), Cam Angle Sensor was fine…..it was a simple blockage between down-pipe and CAT under the engine which had to be removed and cleaned out.
Does this problem sound familiar to anyone?
Thanks for your help everybody
Oh this isn’t my lucky month...hit and ran over a fox (unavoidable) in Sweden driving from Brussels (Belgium) to Stockholm (Sweden) last weekend, a small bit of lower front spoiler is fractured, plus the radiator lower right corner need repair.
Lotus Hethel in UK have some replacement Radiators in stock @ UK£500/US$750..way to expensive, luckily found a place that does full repairs to damaged radiators for a fraction of the cost. I don’t have the Elan Garage Service Manual, but is the Radiators for the Elan 91 SE specially made or still produced for other unknown cars, (guy in Hethel could not answer that)?
Cheers
Dave

Title: Dave, clogged exhaust
Message: It is not uncommon for a catalytic converter to become clogged as they are made of a very fine ceramic mesh. Think of a screen door (at least the ones we have here in Florida to keep the insects out) and you'll have an idea how fine a mesh I'm speaking of. This can act like a strainer and "hold" items in suspension that would otherwise have passed through your exhaust system. I have seen converters I have personally removed over 75% clogged. That was on a car with around 80,000 miles on it.

Title: Gas Tank
Message: About a year and a half ago I had my leaking fuel tank replaced - Lotus provided the "no cost" tank(list price was about $500) and I paid the local dealer (Midwest Auto Group in Columbus OH) about $500 for labor[also had fuel filter replaced while the system was de-pressurized]. Doug - it would be interesting to start a log of tank replacements, VIN numbers and cost for parts/labor.....I'm sure we could exceed the stated "6 or 7" tanks.

Title: Fuel Tank
Message: I agree with the idea of creating a log for the tank replacement, and the current owners who are experiencing the problem. I think that the log should contain the VIN#, the location, the phone #, and status (if it was replaced or not). I just talked to a lawyer and he told me that the more people that have had this problem, the better chance to get Lotus to cover the cost of replacing the tank. He also mentioned to talk to the product safety commission, which might help put some pressure to Lotus.
I am especially interested since my dealer wants to charge me over $1,000 to replace my tank.

Message: I just talked to an agent at the product safety commission and they cannot help. They do not deal with automobile issues. They referred me to NHTSB.

Message: Thanks Matt for the Info.
It sad to say I never ran a car for more than 50,000miles/80,000km so never came accross the problem before..does give a new lease of life to the car do..
Have a good weekend all

Message: Guys, I have the page in the works! Great idea, and thanks for the content suggestions--expect it early next week. I bet we can log more than 20 Elans . . .

Message: Great idea to create a log of cars that have had tanks replaced, would also be interested in location of car - as its real odd that I have not heard of a UK car thats had a tank replaced.

Title: Rebuild
Message: I have been asked to rebuild a 1968 Elan. This car was dismantled about 10 years ago and put into boxes marked Lotus. The workshop manual does not go into enough detail as every nut and bolt has been removed including window winding mechs. I would like to talk to people who have been or who are in the same situation

Message: Mark, mine did open on the LHD side, about 4" below where the fill hose is fixed. The leaks where two stripes about 2" long and were like if someone had them cut in, a very clean cut.

Title: Looks like Bill is getting out of OUR business....
Message: Hey guys. I was reading Bill's Isuzu mailing list and this is part of what he posted yesterday: "I have started the process of whittling down the Isuzu, Storm, and Elan
parts that are to be discontinued. I am starting with all headers and most of the exhaust systems. Anything I don't happen to have on hand at this time I have to consider no longer available, because I can not justify the expense of any more production runs....It is sad, but the reality is that my priorities have shifted in the last month and I am going to have to do something that will pay the bills....I am going to switch over to concentrate 100% on Chevrolet and Pontiac headers and exhaust systems." Now, I have spoke with Bill in person and have always wondered how he managed to make a "living" catering to such a niche market. Sounds as if the writing is on the wall. I hope he does not forget us completely. And I don't mean that as a Lotus owner who doesn't want a supplier to dry up. I mean it because I believe he is worth knowing. -Scott

Title: Rebuilding 1968 Elan?
Message: I think you would be better served by going to http://www.yahoogroups.com and joining the lotuselan group. Far be it from me to say that this list could not help you in some way..but this is really a list for the M100 or later Elan. I have owned 4 or 5 of the old elans..and could probably put one together without a manual. You will find people of the same ilk on the Yahoo group.

Title: Bringing my M100 back to life
Message: In May '01 I did an off at turn 8 at Watkins Glen and went sideways into the right wall. It is on the road again, but I need some help finding some minor parts, like the insides of the outside mirror. I'd like any info on where that mirror came from (car make, model?) to aid in a search for tiny screws that are used to adjust the angle of the mirror thru the action of motor-driven nuts. I've replaced the glass, but those tiny "worm" screws with special snap-in heads. I figure the best bet would be to get a damaged mirror assy that still has these inside? Any info welcomed.
TIA, Jim M.
